"In spite of an increase in membership, contributions to the Annual Appeal are significantly below the amount donated by this time last year," according to Polly Yarnall, former executive director.

"We know that our national economy is in disarray and families are curtailing both spending and charitable contributions, but our NAMI is absolutely dependent on that giving," says Yarnall. "Most of our NAMI members have been the beneficiaries of our Family-to-Family classes for which there is no charge. Nor do we charge for the support groups, programs, and other services we offer. As a matter of fact, the entire community benefits from what NAMI does - they have a vested interest in our being able to maintain operations.

"We see on a daily basis the positive changes we help to make in the lives of our consumers and their families. The thought that we may have to curtail those services or reduce our hours is absolute anathema to us. But without being able to fund the bare-bone essentials—utilities, heat, insurance, and the like—we cannot operate," according to Yarnall. "We keep only $10 of the $30 membership fee—the rest goes to the state of national NAMI organizations.

"At a time when the demand for NAMI help and support is increasing exponentially, it is painful to contemplate not being able to meet these needs. We fervently hope that our friends and supporters will come through in December and enable us to maintain our services. And we are deeply appreciative of those who have already contributed."

Building Clean-up
Having our own building allows us to offer a wide variety of support groups and activities. As with any building, ours needs general maintenance and clean-up. On the 3rd Saturday of June, July and August, we will be having building work days. As with our work days last summer, we will have a barbecue follow our work sessions. This years agenda for building maintenance includes painting the interior of the building. Please call Laura at (503) 356-6835 for more information about helping us maintain our building.
